How to clear a messy home office that is blocking work

An office is the only room that charges you for being messy. The others just sit there. This one quietly makes the work harder, until the state of the desk and the job you are avoiding start to feel like the same problem.

What an office actually collects

Most people expect an office to be buried under paper. It is not. The biggest share by a wide margin is things that belong in other rooms and got set down on the nearest flat surface, which in an office is the desk. Paper is a small part of it. Clothes are a bigger one.

Things that drifted in from other rooms

This pile stalls people because a desk is the most convenient surface in the house, so it collects things that have nothing to do with working.

  1. Clear the space directly in front of the chair.
  2. Group what is out by the room it came from.
  3. Make one pile per destination on the floor.
  4. Carry one pile per trip, not one item.
  5. Put anything you cannot place into a box.
  6. Leave the box outside the room, not in it.

What can go straight in the bin

Rubbish survives in an office because none of it is unpleasant enough to force the issue: packaging, dead stationery, paper that was dealt with months ago.

  1. Bring a bin bag to the desk.
  2. Clear the packaging and empty wrappers first.
  3. Test the pens and bin the dead ones.
  4. Recycle the paper you have already acted on.
  5. Tie the bag before you sit back down.
  6. Put the bag by the door.

The clothes that ended up here

Clothes reach an office because the back of the chair is the nearest hook, and a chair that is wearing a coat has stopped being a chair.

  1. Take everything off the back of the chair.
  2. Split it into clean and worn.
  3. Send the worn to the laundry basket.
  4. Hang the coats where coats live.
  5. Carry the rest out on one trip.
  6. Sit down once to check the chair works.

Why the advice never seems to fit

An office defeats general cleaning advice more often than any other room, and the reason is that no two are the same shape. One is a spare bedroom with a desk pushed against the wall. Another is the end of the kitchen table, cleared every evening. A step written for a room with drawers is worthless in a room that has none. When the advice does not fit the room, it is the advice that is wrong.

Common questions

What should you clear first in a home office?

The space directly in front of the chair. It is the only part you actually need to work, it clears in a couple of minutes, and it gives you somewhere to sort everything else onto.

How do you tidy a desk when you still have to work at it?

Clear one arm's width and stop. A desk does not need to be empty to be usable, and a workable patch today beats a perfect desk you never get around to making.

What do you do with paperwork you are not ready to deal with?

Put it in one place and give that place a name. Undecided paper is not a filing problem, it is a decision you have not made yet, and it does not have to be made today.

Why does a home office get messier than other rooms?

Because the desk is usually the most convenient flat surface in the house. Things get set down there on the way past, and nothing about a desk says they should not be.
